Principal Functions:
Within the framework of the objectives and policies established by the CEO, plans and coordinates inpatient nursing services with those of the medical and administrative systems. Participates as a member of the hospital’s management team in planning, policy formulation, and administrative decision making with particular reference to the role, functions, and operations of the hospital’s inpatient nursing services. Is responsible for patient care, management, resource management, and fiscal management.
Position Duties:
- Responsible for managing, directing, and supervising departments assigned.
- Maintains current policies and procedures in departments supervised.
- Maintains current job descriptions for all positions supervised with reporting responsibilities.
- Maintains accurate up-to-date performance standards for employees supervised; sets yearly objectives.
- Maintains open communications with staff; solves problems as necessary.
- Provides quality ongoing educational programs for all staff supervised.
- Oversees departmental scheduling in each department to assure staffing relevant to patient volume and workload.
- Coordinates a viable ongoing, well documented Quality Assurance program for the departments supervised to assure efficient, effective, safe delivery of services.
- Assesses the quality of care rendered.
- Ensures the attainment of hospital objectives thorough the selection, development, motivation, and evaluation of hospital personnel for those departments directly supervised through coordination with the Human Resource Department.
- Responsible for staff performance, staff recruitment, staff retention, and staff development.
- Provides for proper training, education, orientations for employees and self, maintains records, documentation of all records as directed by hospital and medical staff policy and procedure, and federal and state requirements.
- Hires qualified personnel; disciplines, and terminates as necessary.
- Performs assigned employee evaluations on a timely basis.
- Maintains a minimal turnover rate. Maintains a minimal staff absentee rate.
- Participates in the development and implementation of new employee orientation.
- Ensures that all directly supervised personnel meet annual in-service requirements as established by hospital and medical staff policy and procedure, and federal and state requirements.
- Promotes health care services that are produced in a cost-effective manner while maintaining the hospital’s quality standards and following the mission and values established by administration.
- Responsible for collaborating with other departments and agencies regarding resources and services for improved patient care and staff development.
- Responsible for planning developing and implementing a budgeted process for staffing and services rendered.
- Evaluates the quality and cost-effectiveness of staffing and services within the goals for the hospital.
- Develop with managers a capital expenditure budget at the beginning of each fiscal year implemented with no significant deviations.
- Determines the types and numbers of nursing and ancillary personnel and staff necessary to provide care for all supervised areas of the hospital.
- Maintains a current organizational chart for all departments supervised.
- Encourages the integration of the hospital departments assigned within the community by using effective communication and public relations program. Uses a self directed approach for self assessment and development.
- Promotes positive guest relations in departments supervised. Follows up on a patient complaint, information is documented.
- Maintains membership in the appropriate professional organizations(s).
- Maintains an acceptable level of clinical nursing skills as a resource to the hospital.
- Correct any identified deficiencies in assigned areas as identified by review.
- Participates in appropriate meetings and committees.
- Encourages and supports research and improvement studies that can make meaningful contributions to the quality and economy of nursing services.
- Consistently demonstrates professionalism with all internal and external customers as evidenced by positive customer and peer feedback. Communicates effectively with all staff, physicians and patients as evidenced by the establishment and maintenance of productive working relationships.
- Adheres to safety policies and procedures in performing job duties and responsibilities. Reports all suspected violations and hazards. Ascertains that employees supervised follow such standards.
- Responds to emergency situations with competence and composure. Is resourceful and calm in emergencies. Implements practices and regulations adopted to provide safety in the health care environment.
- Displays concern and initiative.
- Is prompt and efficient with minimal absences.
- Accurately assesses and interprets age-specific patient data and responses to questions and instructions. Involves the patient’s family/significant other in decision-making about the patient’s care.
- Participates in primary care of patients as needed and makes rounds to verify that patient’s needs are met by staff. Enforces the implementation of nursing practice standards to provide quality patient care.
- Applies materiel management principles to establish procedures for use, cleaning, and maintenance of patient care equipment and supplies. Identifies and evaluates need for items relative to trends and physician requests.
- Works with Materials Management to ascertain the there is availability of supplies and equipment to meet patient needs. Promotes cost effectiveness and implements procedures to control waste. Initiates requisitions to replenish inventory and to order new products.
- Floats to other departments and or facilities as directed and assigned.
- Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate books; journals and other literature and attending related seminars, conferences, etc.
- Maintains a professional approach with confidentiality. Assures protection and privacy of health information as attained through written, electronic or oral disclosures.
- Complies with federal and hospital requirements in the areas of protected health information and patient privacy.
- Cooperates and maintains good rapport with nursing staff, medical staff, other departments, and visitors as well as outside referral sources, hospitals and physicians.
- Seeks guidance and remains knowledgeable of, and complies with, all applicable federal and state laws, as well as hospital polices that apply to assigned duties.
- Complies with hospital expectations regarding ethical behavior and standards of conduct.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Graduate of an accredited school of registered nursing with a Masters Degree.
Experience: Four years of related work experience, three years in supervision.
Licensure: Current Indiana Nursing License (valid and non blemished). CPR certification within 180 days of hire.
Skills: Able to perform administrative skills. Knowledge of theories of management. Experience in human resource management. Skills in financial management.
Working Conditions:
The employee may be exposed to blood borne pathogens, infectious diseases, and other hazardous wastes, (i.e. Hepatitis, Aids, Tuberculosis). Proper precautions will be taught and provided by the hospital. The position requires a considerable amount of walking, stooping, pulling, lifting, feeling, hearing, and repetitive motions. Ability to move quickly in response to physician and patient needs, to stand for long periods, occasional overhead and low reaching, and to exert force of up to 50 lbs. occasionally, up to 20 lbs. frequently and/or up to 10 lbs. constantly. Patient care activities may require the ability to lift of up to 30 lbs. constantly, up to 40 lbs. occasionally and up to 100 lbs. rarely.
